Introducing Our New Musical Director — Joey Wong

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Joey Wong as the new Musical Director of Blackley Brass Band.

At just 23 years old, Joey is already making a name for himself as one of the most exciting young conductors in the brass band movement.

Joey recently achieved an impressive 3rd place in the Brass Band Conductors’ Association Conducting Competition, where he was the youngest finalist. He was also the youngest finalist in the National Youth Brass Band Conducting Competition, demonstrating a passion and commitment to conducting well beyond his years.

Joey’s musical journey began on trombone after moving to the UK from Hong Kong to study music. He went on to play as Solo Trombone with Wingates Band, gaining valuable experience at the highest levels of brass banding.

He has also previously held the position of Musical Director of Vernon Building Society (Poynton) Band, leading the band to 6th place in the North West.

Alongside his work in brass banding, Joey is a peripatetic music teacher and has recently completed a year as an Ensemble Leader with Resonate. His enthusiasm for developing musicians and ensembles is matched by an ambitious approach to his own development as a conductor.

Joey has actively sought opportunities to challenge himself, taking part in competitions and masterclasses, working with leading ensembles including Hepworth, Hammonds, KNDS Faireys and the RNCM Wind Orchestra.

We are incredibly excited to welcome Joey to Blackley Brass Band and look forward to seeing what the future holds as we begin this next chapter together.
